Births, Deaths and Marriages

Commissioned April 2011 by hatch, Nottingham Forest FC and Nottingham Playhouse for the NEAT11 Festival
"Not a sad story about tortured paternal relationship...[but] a unique mobile insight into [the writer's]
relationship with his dad where Forest history and personal history overlap" - Nottingham Evening Post

Performed 7th June 2011
I am 23 years, 3 months and 4 days old.
I have been officially recorded as alive for 23 years, 2 months and 20 days.
I have been a Forest fan for slightly longer.

They say football's a matter of life and death, it's far more important than that

I am Gareth and I am in China.

The ‘Gareth’ you will see tonight is Richie Garton but the words are mine, mostly. The digressions are Richie's, mostly.

This is verbatim theatre where the playwright, his father and his football team are the subject.

This is a show about feelings, theatre and football. It is about talking about it, about confronting it, about not hiding things away in a shoebox and denying that any issue exists. Or, in failing that, paying a friend to do it for you whilst you are 5969 miles away.

This performance is set on several days: 3rd April 1988, 15th April 1988, 5th March 1996, 19th March 1996 and 7th June 2011.

They are, sequentially: my birth, my registration, FC Bayern Munich vs Nottingham Forest played at Munich Olympic Stadium and watched from the blanket box the end of a bed at 94 Elmswood Gardens, Nottingham Forest vs FC Bayern Munich at the City Ground and today.

I am variously 0, 7 and 23.

I am scared of what my dad will think but I hope he likes the end.

They say you should write about what you know…
